The German Shepherd puppy in this adorable Instagram video from @bymaywager knows that wherever his tiny human brother goes, that’s where the party is. In the video, the puppy and a young baby grow up side by side. While doing so, they turn everyday moments into the kind of friendship people swear by, as the on-screen text reads, “When you get a new best friend to grow up with,” and the video backs it up.

The video opens with the child sitting in a stroller while the German Shepherd puppy squeezes in close to the toddler. From there, the montage jumps through their days together, including playing and walking in the snow and cuddling each other indoors as if their lives depended on it. One of the final moments even shows a baby monitor view of the puppy climbing onto the crib and sitting near the child, as if the pup has decided he needs to stay by the toddler even during bedtime.

The video’s caption calls the whole thing a gut-punch in the best way, writing, “Nothing hits harder than watching your baby and your GSD grow up together.”

It makes sense that the puppy wants to stay glued to the child. German Shepherds form really close bonds, and they love having a job. For a lot of dogs, that job becomes keeping an eye on the family members, checking in, and sticking close. Some of it is affection, some of it is their instinct, and the rest is their habit that gets rewarded every time the child laughs or plays with them.

Viewers loved the moment, gushing in the comments about the duo. One simply wrote, “AWWW,” while others called it “pure love,” and many predicted the puppy would grow into a natural guardian. If this video proves anything, it is that the German Shepherd puppy sees his best friend in the baby, and he plans to be there for it all.
