Many pet parents believe their dogs understand more than they let on. From recognizing routines to responding to specific words, dogs will find ways to communicate their needs clearly. Some even go a step further, using learned behaviors to “ask” for things in ways that feel surprisingly intentional. One Labrador Retriever has caught attention in a video for using a thoughtful and structured method to ask for her favorite carrot treats.

Video proves dog’s way of asking mom for carrot treats is polite and smart

The video, shared by Instagram user @oreothedogbiscuit, features a Labrador named Oreo demonstrating how she communicates her cravings. It begins with Oreo standing attentively as her owner asks what she wants. The dog appears focused, as if considering how to respond, before walking toward a set of communication buttons placed in a basket.

These buttons are often used by pet parents to help dogs associate words with actions. As such, each button produces a specific recorded message when pressed. With that in mind, Oreo approaches them and waits for her owner to bring them closer. Once they are within reach, she presses two buttons in sequence. The first says “Treats,” followed by another that says “Carrots.”

Her request is clear and surprisingly specific. Rather than barking or pacing, Oreo calmly communicates exactly what she wants. Her owner responds by acknowledging the request, noting that Oreo hasn’t had a carrot treat yet that morning. She then prepares the snack by chopping up a carrot and offering it to the dog.

In the caption, her mom explains that Oreo uses the treat button multiple times a day. However, there are limits in place. Most of the time, Oreo receives small training treats or portions of her regular meals. If she presses the button repeatedly, her owner signals that treats are “all done” for the time being to avoid overfeeding.

Carrots are low in calories and rich in fiber and vitamins, making them a good snack for your pup. It’s best to cut them into small, manageable pieces to prevent choking, especially for smaller dogs. Raw carrots can help with dental health, while lightly steamed ones may be easier to chew for older pets. As with any treat, moderation is important. Carrots should complement your dog’s regular diet, not replace it, and it’s always a good idea to introduce new foods gradually to ensure your pet tolerates them well.
